Negative Keywords in Google Ads: How to Exclude Irrelevant Searches

Analyse von Suchbegriffen und Negative Keywords in einer Google-Ads-Kampagne
Google Ads · Search terms and campaign quality

Negative keywords help exclude searches that may trigger an advertisement but do not match the offer, service area, or intended customer profile.

They are not a replacement for a clear campaign structure. Used carefully, however, they can reduce potentially irrelevant clicks and prevent a limited media budget from being spent on obviously unsuitable search intent.

This guide explains the three negative match types, the search terms report, exclusion levels, multilingual campaigns, and common mistakes when building negative keyword lists.

Direct answer

What are negative keywords in Google Ads?

Negative keywords prevent an advertisement from being served for selected searches. The search queries that are blocked depend on the negative match type.

A negative keyword is useful when the search intent clearly does not match the offer. A trade business that only performs paid customer work may not want to pay for clicks from people looking for jobs, training, equipment hire, or free DIY instructions.

Important: an expensive search term or one that has not yet converted is not automatically irrelevant. Begin by excluding intent that the business clearly cannot serve.

Negative keywords can reduce some unnecessary traffic. They do not replace realistic Google Ads budget planning, a suitable landing page, or reliable conversion tracking.

Match types

How do negative broad, phrase, and exact match work?

Negative match types behave differently from positive keywords. They do not automatically expand to synonyms or singular and plural forms. Capitalisation and misspellings are generally handled automatically.

Negative broad match

Blocks a search when all terms in the negative keyword appear, even in a different order. The ad may still appear when only some terms are present.

marketing jobs

Negative phrase match

Blocks a search when the complete sequence appears in the same order. Other words may appear before or after the phrase.

"marketing jobs"

Negative exact match

Blocks only the exact search without additional words. Longer or modified searches may still trigger an advertisement.

[marketing jobs]
Negative setting Search query Can the ad appear?
Broad: marketing jobs jobs marketing frankfurt No – both terms are present
Broad: marketing jobs marketing career frankfurt Yes – “jobs” is not present
Phrase: "marketing jobs" marketing jobs frankfurt No – the complete sequence is present
Phrase: "marketing jobs" jobs marketing frankfurt Yes – the order is different
Exact: [marketing jobs] marketing jobs No – the search exactly matches the exclusion
Exact: [marketing jobs] marketing jobs frankfurt Yes – the search contains an additional word

Google provides further examples in its official explanation of negative keyword match types.

Excluding “job” does not automatically exclude “jobs”, “career”, “vacancy”, or “training”. These variations should be reviewed separately where necessary.

Data source

Use the search terms report as the foundation

The search terms report is the main source of evidence. It shows visible searches that triggered advertisements and allows them to be assessed using clicks, cost, conversions, and other campaign data.

Do not exclude every search immediately. Divide terms into four groups:

  1. Relevant and valuable: the search fits the offer and produces qualified outcomes.
  2. Relevant but lacking sufficient data: the intent fits, but the sample is too small.
  3. Unclear: the search requires a review of context, landing page, or lead quality.
  4. Clearly irrelevant: the product, service, location, or user intent does not match the offer.

Google explains how to use the search terms report to find negative keyword ideas. A search term added directly from the report is set to negative exact match by default. Before saving, confirm whether exact, phrase, or broad reflects the intended exclusion.

Search intent

Which types of searches are often irrelevant?

There is no universal negative keyword list for every business. The same term may be irrelevant to one company and commercially valuable to another.

Category Possible terms Check before excluding
Jobs and careers job, jobs, career, vacancy, training, internship Is the company currently recruiting?
Free information free, template, PDF, download, DIY, tutorial Does the business provide free consultations or resources?
Wrong service scope hire, used, spare parts, repair manual Are these options definitely unavailable?
Wrong audience private, wholesale, B2B, for students Which customer group should the campaign reach?
Wrong location cities, countries, or delivery areas not served Would location targeting solve the problem more accurately?
Support and navigation login, hotline, manual, customer service Are these existing customers or potential new customers?
Do not automatically exclude “price”, “cost”, “quote”, or “cheap”. These terms can indicate strong commercial intent. The important question is whether the business can handle price enquiries and whether the resulting contacts are economically suitable.

Competitor names should not automatically be placed on a global exclusion list either. Depending on the strategy, those searches may be relevant, too expensive, ambiguous, or intentionally unwanted.

Structure

At which level should negative keywords be added?

The selected level determines how widely the exclusion applies.

  • Ad-group level: suitable when a term should be excluded only from a specific ad group. Excessive cross-exclusion can make the structure unnecessarily complex.
  • Campaign level: appropriate when the intent is irrelevant to the entire campaign.
  • Shared negative keyword list: useful for recurring exclusions applied to several selected campaigns.
  • Account level: use only for terms that are clearly unwanted throughout the whole advertising account.
The broader the level, the more carefully the exclusion should be reviewed. An account-wide negative keyword may also block future campaigns for which the same term would be relevant.

For Performance Max, account- or campaign-level negative keywords can affect Search and Shopping inventory. They do not automatically control Display and Video placements, where other exclusion settings may be required.

Preparation

Build a negative keyword list before launch

A small, justified list is useful before launching a campaign. A copied list containing hundreds of generic terms is risky because it may block valuable searches.

Use this order:

  1. Document the offer boundaries: which products, services, and variants are definitely not provided?
  2. Define the audience: B2B or B2C, companies or private customers, minimum order value, and preferred customer types.
  3. Review the target area: exclude unsupported locations through location settings where possible.
  4. Collect unsuitable informational intent: jobs, training, free templates, instructions, or support when they do not fit the campaign.
  5. Use existing data: previous search terms, website search, CRM feedback, and recurring unsuitable enquiries.
  6. Select the match type: decide whether only one exact search or a broader intent should be blocked.
  7. Document the level: ad group, campaign, shared list, or whole account.

Multilingual campaigns

Negative keywords for multilingual campaigns in Germany

Users in Germany may search in German, English, Russian, Ukrainian, and other languages. A German negative keyword is not automatically translated into other languages.

A campaign may therefore require several language variants:

Intent German Other possible variants
Job search job, jobs, karriere, stellenangebot vacancy, career, работа, вакансии, робота, вакансії
Free kostenlos, gratis free, бесплатно, безкоштовно
Do it yourself selber machen, anleitung, vorlage DIY, tutorial, инструкция, шаблон, інструкція, шаблон

Do not add every translation in advance. First review which languages actually appear in the search terms and whether the underlying intent should genuinely be excluded.

Optimisation process

Review search terms regularly and transparently

A negative keyword list is not a one-off document. New searches, offers, target locations, and campaign types change the requirements.

A practical workflow:

  1. Open the search terms report for a meaningful date range.
  2. Review cost, clicks, conversions, and campaign context.
  3. Compare the search intent with the actual offer.
  4. Check CRM or sales feedback when leads are available.
  5. Mark relevant terms as keyword or content opportunities.
  6. Exclude clearly irrelevant terms with the appropriate match type.
  7. Continue observing unclear terms instead of blocking them too quickly.
  8. Document the date, reason, match type, and exclusion level.

Review should be more frequent during the launch phase. Later, the schedule can be adapted to search volume, media spend, and the number of new terms.

Measurement

Evaluate negative keywords using conversions and lead quality

A search term may produce many clicks and still be valuable. Conversely, a term may produce a formal conversion that later turns out to be an unsuitable or unreachable enquiry.

Do not assess only:

  • clicks and average CPC;
  • formal conversions in the advertising account;
  • cost per conversion.

Also consider:

  • whether the enquiry matches the service and location;
  • whether the person can be reached;
  • whether the project meets the minimum order value;
  • whether a proposal was created;
  • whether the enquiry became an order or revenue.

Error analysis

Common negative keyword mistakes

Mistake Possible consequence Better approach
Using a large generic list from the internet Relevant searches are blocked without being noticed Review every exclusion against the actual offer
Using an overly broad negative A valuable search intent disappears completely Use phrase or exact when the exclusion should be narrower
Automatically excluding price-related terms High-intent users are no longer reached Review lead quality and commercial value first
Choosing the wrong level Other campaigns lose relevant traffic Apply the exclusion as locally as possible
Ignoring singular, plural, and synonyms Similar irrelevant variants may continue to appear Review actual search terms and add variants deliberately
Negative and positive keywords overlap Desired advertisements cannot serve Check for conflicts before saving
Reacting only to click cost Relevant terms are excluded with too little data Assess intent, conversions, and lead quality together
Not documenting exclusions Later losses in reach are difficult to explain Record the reason, level, match type, and date
Negative keywords cannot repair a weak campaign strategy. If location targeting, the offer, keywords, advertisements, or landing page do not align, an increasingly long exclusion list will not solve the underlying problem.
Checklist

Checklist for a clean negative keyword structure

  • The offer and its limits are documented.
  • The main unsuitable search intents are known.
  • Every negative keyword has a justified match type.
  • Account-wide exclusions are irrelevant to the whole account.
  • Shared lists are applied only to suitable campaigns.
  • German, English, Russian, and Ukrainian variants are reviewed where necessary.
  • Price and cost terms are not excluded automatically.
  • Positive and negative keywords do not conflict.
  • The search terms report is reviewed regularly.
  • Unclear terms are not blocked with insufficient data.
  • Conversions and lead quality support the decision.
  • Important changes are documented.
  • Lists are reviewed after new services or locations are introduced.
Conclusion

Negative keywords should improve relevance, not blindly reduce reach

A good negative keyword strategy does not begin with the longest possible list. It begins with a clear understanding of the offer, target audience, and searches the business cannot serve.

The strongest decisions combine the search terms report, an appropriate match type, the correct exclusion level, conversion data, and feedback on lead quality.
