Search Terms in AI Max: Matching, Exclusions and Landing Pages

Direct answer

AI Max search terms should be assessed as complete delivery cases, not as isolated words

Only the chain of query, matching source, ad, actual landing page and outcome explains quality

A search term in AI Max is initially an observed user query, not a finished verdict on relevance. For incremental search term matching, Google combines broad match expansion with keywordless methods that use existing keywords, ad assets and landing pages as inputs. Google's official explanation of how AI Max for Search campaigns works therefore identifies several possible origins for an ad delivery. Unusual wording on its own reveals neither the precise matching mechanism nor the commercial value of the query.

The dependable unit of review is: query → matching source → headline served → landing page actually selected → conversion → verified lead or sales quality. If one link is missing, the diagnosis remains provisional. A relevant query can fail on an unsuitable page, while a broadly phrased query can express valuable demand that was not present word for word in the original keyword list.

This guide introduces the AI Max query control log for that purpose. Every case receives evidence, an owner and one of five decisions: approve, observe, constrain, redirect or exclude. The log does not promise a performance increase. It prevents teams from deriving negative keywords hastily from a single row or confusing technical traffic with commercial success.

Query

Record the search term actually reported or the aggregated intent.

Origin

Separate match type, source and the input most likely to have influenced delivery.

Delivery

Review the headline and actual landing page as one connected advertising promise.

Outcome

Verify conversion, CRM status and business value after the relevant delay.

01 · Boundary

Separate ongoing query control from the general setup of AI Max

This is a guide to diagnosis and decisions after delivery, not a second setup manual

The fundamental mapping of search intent, keywords and landing pages remains the strategic starting point. The official guide to setting up AI Max also explains its switches and control levels. This article begins after that point: search terms have appeared, their sources and destinations must be reconstructed, and several signals must be turned into a traceable action.

It does not revisit the full approval of text customisation, conversion goals, bidding strategy, budget or experiment design. Those settings form the controlled baseline. If they are changed while queries are being analysed, the change must be recorded in the event log; otherwise, a matching decision becomes entangled with a measurement, bidding or website effect.

The operational boundary is clear: article 36 explains which AI Max features to activate and under which controls. Article 37 explains how to assess real queries afterwards and steer them selectively through negatives, brands, locations or URLs. A divergent query is therefore an investigation case, not automatically a setup error.

Assumed

Goals, tracking, budget, feature states and the eligible page set are documented.

Decided here

Approve, observe, constrain, redirect or exclude with a defined scope.

02 · Terminology

Keep search term, keyword, match type, source and landing page distinct

Similar-sounding report fields answer different diagnostic questions

A keyword is an input supplied by the advertiser; a search term is the reported query entered by a user. Google's help page on keyword matching options also makes clear that exact match can capture the same meaning or intent and need not be identical word for word. Broad match may reach related searches and use additional signals. A textual comparison alone therefore cannot explain the match.

AI Max reports add Match type and Source. The ‘AI Max’ match type value marks incremental matches; the source helps distinguish broad match expansion from keywordless matching through a landing page or asset. ‘Selected by’ answers a different question again: whether AI Max selected the reported landing page. Read these fields alongside one another rather than collapsing them into a single label.

Term Meaning Question answered Do not equate with Evidence required Typical mistake
Search term Reported user query What did the user search for? Advertiser keyword Search terms report and date range Blocking the wording immediately
Keyword Advertiser-supplied input Which semantic direction was supplied? Actual query Keyword and ad group context Reading exact as word-for-word
Match type Relationship shown in the report How is the match classified? Keyword setting Match type column Misreading a reporting label
Source Origin of an AI Max match Did expansion come mainly through a keyword or keywordless matching? Commercial cause Source column Failing to add the column
Landing page Destination URL actually served Where did the click arrive? Default RSA URL Landing pages report Checking only the planned URL
03 · Data state

Secure a comparable data state and record the report's visible limits before judging a query

Date range, filters, privacy thresholds and conversion delay belong in the finding

The official Google Ads search terms report is not a complete raw log of every query. Low-volume searches may not appear individually because of privacy thresholds; Insights can aggregate such queries into themes or ‘other queries’. Invisible individual searches must neither be invented nor declared worthless as a group.

Every export records the account time zone, date range, campaign and ad group filters, attribution state and creation date. A week-on-week comparison is meaningful only when weekdays, seasonality, budget state and material changes are comparable. Recent conversions and CRM outcomes remain marked as incomplete until the usual delay window has passed.

The log distinguishes a measured zero from data that is not yet available. ‘No conversion’ can mean none was reported, it may arrive late, or tracking may have failed. A commercial assessment is valid only after a technical check and the agreed maturation period. If tracking is broken, the affected period is not used as evidence about matching quality.

  • Save a consistent date range, time zone and filter state.
  • Record changes to budget, bidding, goals, ads and the website separately.
  • Mark Other search terms and privacy thresholds as visibility limits.
  • Wait for conversion and CRM delay before issuing a final verdict.
  • Remove tracking failures from performance decisions and repair them immediately.
04 · Case record

Assemble a complete delivery case from the query, headline and actual landing page

The dedicated AI Max report shows the connection, not behaviour after the click

Google's guide to reporting in AI Max recommends the ‘Search terms and landing pages from AI Max’ view. It allows the search term, headline, landing page, campaign and ad group to be reviewed together, while Source and the AI Max match type add diagnostic context. However, filtering for AI Max does not automatically include ‘Other search terms’, so its total must not be treated as all possible AI Max traffic.

This view reconstructs ad delivery, not a complete customer journey after the click. Session quality, form content, the sales outcome or returns must be added from analytics, the CRM or the shop system. Each notable case therefore receives a stable key composed of date range, campaign, ad group, query and destination URL.

Several similar rows are combined into a pattern without erasing the individual cases. The appropriate control is selected only once a recurring need, a specific matching source or a problematic page family becomes visible. This prevents a genuine landing-page problem from being treated incorrectly with a negative keyword.

Report core

Read query, source, headline, URL, campaign and ad group together.

After the click

Add engagement, conversion and CRM quality from connected systems.

Pattern

Group repetitions by intent, source, page and outcome, not merely by wording.

05 · Control log

Use the AI Max query control log as a shared case record for marketing, web and sales

Five unambiguous verdicts replace spontaneous list maintenance without a rationale

The log begins with immutable evidence: review date, reporting period, campaign, ad group, search term or aggregated theme, match type, source, headline, actual URL and selection mechanism. Strategic fields follow: search intent, offer relevance, geographic fit, brand relationship, conversion, CRM status and the expected reporting delay.

Every case ends with exactly one current verdict. Approve means that intent, message, page and outcome align. Observe keeps a plausible but immature case open. Constrain changes the permitted matching space through a brand, location or ad group control. Redirect improves the destination or URL rule. Exclude blocks a demonstrably unsuitable query, brand or page at the narrowest sensible scope.

Each verdict includes its rationale, control level, owner, implementation date and review date. A later decision-maker must be able to see what evidence existed and which side effect was expected. If an action is reversed, the previous version remains in the record. The document is therefore both a control instrument and a learning archive, not merely a negative list.

  • Approve: document a suitable delivery and retain it as a reference case.
  • Observe: wait for data maturity or repetition without intervening prematurely.
  • Constrain: narrow the matching space through the control appropriate to the cause.
  • Redirect: lead a suitable query to a better page and message.
  • Exclude: block confirmed unsuitable demand at an appropriate scope.
06 · Workflow

Take every query through seven steps from the report to controlled verification

A fixed sequence separates data collection, diagnosis, intervention and impact review

The workflow begins broadly and ends narrowly. First, the data state is secured; next, the complete delivery case is reconstructed. Only then are intent, commercial fit and financial outcome classified. This order prevents the team from blocking a visible symptom when the ad or landing page is the real weakness.

The action is always taken at the smallest level that reliably resolves the confirmed problem. One unsuitable term rarely justifies an account-wide exclusion. After implementation, the same reporting combination is reviewed again; reach loss, new landing pages and CRM quality are among the side effects to inspect.

Step Review question Required evidence Possible finding Next action Owner
1 · Freeze Is the data state comparable? Date range, filters and changes Mature or constrained Analyse or wait Google Ads team
2 · Connect What delivery occurred? Query, source, headline and URL Complete case chain Create case ID Google Ads team
3 · Understand What intent does it express? SERP and offer context Suitable, unclear or unrelated Classify Marketing
4 · Inspect Does the actual page fit? URL, content, language and tracking Suitable or defective Approve or redirect Web team
5 · Evaluate Does it create business value? Conversion and CRM status Verified, open or unsuitable Observe or act Sales and analytics
6 · Decide Which control is proportionate? Pattern and risk scope One of five verdicts Approve change Campaign owner
7 · Verify Did the change work as expected? Before-and-after case sample Resolved or side effect Keep, correct or reverse Google Ads team
07 · Origin

Infer the matching origin from Source, the ad group, assets and page context

Broad match expansion and keywordless matching require different corrections

If Source indicates an expansion of existing keywords, first check whether the keyword, ad group theme and negative boundaries still describe the intended demand. With keywordless matching, page content and assets move to the foreground. An ambiguous service page can attract unrelated demand even when the keyword list itself is clean.

Source is a diagnostic clue, not proof of one isolated trigger. Campaign structure, user context and additional signals work together. The log therefore records both the reported value and the input most likely to matter. Claims such as ‘this word definitely came from this URL’ are made only when the report genuinely supports that connection.

Corrections follow the cause: sharpen the keyword or ad group context, revise a misleading asset, clarify page content, constrain the eligible URL set or temporarily turn matching off for the affected ad group. A negative keyword remains an option, but it is not the default reflex for every keywordless match.

Keyword context

Review meaning, the ad group's role and existing negatives together.

Asset context

Inspect headlines and descriptions for claims that are too broad or ambiguous.

Page context

Check headings, navigation and the offer for unintended signals.

Control

Choose the smallest control that corrects the established cause.

08 · Intent

Classify search intent and commercial fit separately

Topical proximity is necessary, but it does not yet prove a valuable opportunity

A query can be relevant to the service yet commercially unsuitable because of an unsupported region, the wrong company size, a platform that is not offered or purely academic research. Conversely, unfamiliar wording can contain specific purchase intent. Classification therefore begins with the user's problem, not similarity to the preferred keyword.

The log distinguishes informational, comparison, navigational, transactional and support intent. Offer fit, region, language, target-customer type and expected order value follow. Only then are click cost, conversion and CRM quality added. This preserves the distinction between a case that was wrong in substance and one for which mature commercial evidence is simply not yet available.

For mixed intent, choose Observe or test a more precise landing page. Exclusion is appropriate when a recurring pattern sits clearly outside the business. Weak performance for relevant demand may instead point to the message, page, price or sales process and requires a counter-check before it is blocked.

  • Describe the problem and expected solution in one neutral sentence.
  • Assign informational, comparison, navigational, transactional or support intent.
  • Check the offer, region, language, target-customer type and exclusion criteria.
  • Assess conversion and CRM quality only after sufficient data maturity.
  • Observe or redirect unclear cases instead of excluding them automatically.
09 · Negatives

Derive negative keywords from recurring unsuitable patterns and choose their reach deliberately

Negative broad, phrase and exact behave differently from positive keyword match types

Our practical guide to negative keywords in Google Ads covers list maintenance and conflict checking in greater depth. For AI Max, it is especially important not to equate the official behaviour of negative keywords with positive match types: negatives do not cover close variants automatically. Singulars, plurals or synonyms can require separate entries, whereas capitalisation and misspellings are accounted for.

A negative is derived from confirmed unsuitable intent, not mere surprise. Negative broad blocks a query when all its words occur, irrespective of order. Negative phrase requires the word sequence; negative exact blocks the corresponding expression without additional words. Before approval, test at least one example that must be blocked and one that must remain eligible.

Scope determines the potential damage from overblocking. A local problem remains in the affected ad group or campaign where the account structure permits. Account-wide lists are reserved for exclusions that are unquestionably global. Very long queries need added caution because Google describes possible delivery when a negative term appears after the sixteenth word.

Unsuitable pattern Evidence Appropriate type Sensible scope Counter-check Verdict
One clearly unsuitable exact need Repeated or high-risk query Negative exact Narrowest affected level Preserve a valuable longer query Exclude
Fixed unsuitable word sequence Several variants of the same intent Negative phrase Ad group or campaign Test a different word order Exclude
All words express globally unsuitable demand Broad, verified pattern Negative broad Only with a safe scope Test every valuable combination Constrain
Unusual but plausible need Single case without mature quality No negative yet No change CRM and recurrence check Observe
Suitable query, wrong page Relevant intent and unsuitable URL No query negative URL or page control Test an alternative destination Redirect
10 · Counter-check

Test for valuable demand that could be lost before approving any exclusion

Challenge the candidate with positive examples, scope and existing exclusion logic

Account-level negative keywords can affect several areas of Search and Shopping. Google's guidance on account-level negative keywords is therefore a reference for scope, not an invitation to block local anomalies globally. Before adoption, check which other campaigns could legitimately need the same term.

The counter-check contains three cases: a query that must unquestionably be blocked, a valuable query that sounds similar and an edge case whose treatment is unclear. Apply the proposed match type to every word sequence, either mentally or in a review table. If doubt remains, make the exclusion narrower or continue observing.

Also inspect existing negative lists, brand rules and geographic boundaries for overlap. Several controls can create the same effect and obscure the diagnosis. After the change, the team checks not only whether the unsuitable pattern disappeared, but also impressions, query diversity, conversions and CRM quality across the remaining demand.

  • Document a blocking example, a valuable counter-example and an unclear edge case.
  • Apply the match type to all three cases and choose the narrowest effective version.
  • Compare side effects at ad group, campaign and account level.
  • Check existing negatives, brands and locations for duplicate control.
  • Measure reach loss and commercial quality again after the change.
No account-wide reflex

Exclude a term globally only when it is unquestionably unsuitable for every affected campaign and valuable counter-examples have been tested.

11 · Brands and locations

Resolve brand relationships, competitor queries and place names with their own controls

Brand and location rules answer different questions from negative keywords

Use brand inclusions for Search campaigns to constrain the permitted brand relationship; an ad-group-level list can replace the campaign setting for that group. Brand exclusions for Search campaigns instead prevent delivery for unwanted brand relationships at campaign level. Both mechanisms use brand entities and are not simply keyword negatives under another name.

Place names also require a separate diagnosis. Locations of interest in geographic targeting is an optional ad-group-level control and can constrain matching through a keyword, landing page or asset. Users must still meet the campaign's geographic targeting, and excluded campaign locations take precedence. The feature therefore does not replace correct geotargeting.

For competitor queries, review legal approval, search intent, message and destination together. A comparison query can be strategically suitable while a misleading brand association must be stopped immediately. Navigational searches for the advertiser's own brand can, in turn, belong to a clearly defined brand strategy. The log records whether the case was constrained, excluded or deliberately approved.

  • Distinguish your own brand, a competitor brand, a reseller relationship and a generic product term.
  • Check brand lists at campaign and ad group level for overrides.
  • Use Locations of interest only in addition to correct campaign geography.
  • Constrain the wrong language or region immediately when the risk is material.
  • Obtain specialist approval for legally or strategically sensitive brand cases.
12 · Actual destination

Review the landing page actually served, not merely the URL entered in the ad

Final URL expansion can select another relevant page on the domain and change the proposition

An effective landing page for Google Ads must connect the query, ad and conversion task. When Final URL expansion is active, however, Google can select a different page on the same domain that it considers more relevant. The feature works at campaign level, requires text customisation and is enabled by default when opting in to AI Max.

The log therefore records the planned RSA URL and the reported actual URL separately. Review every served page for the offer, language, region, availability, pricing logic, form, mobile usability and tracking. Legal pages, careers, login areas, empty categories, archive pages and expired promotions are common exclusion candidates, but only a real inventory of the site determines what is unsuitable.

Final URL expansion or active URL inclusions can cause pinned RSA assets not to be used. If a particular headline is mandatory for legal or strategic reasons, pinning alone is not a sufficient control. URL features, text delivery and the required statement must be approved together, or dynamic selection must be disabled.

Content

Query, offer, language and advertising claim must align on the actual page.

Function

Test the form, mobile experience, redirects and conversion path in practice.

Control

Record the selection mechanism, URL rule, pinning requirement and owner.

13 · URL decision

Distinguish redirecting, constraining URLs and excluding a destination completely

A suitable query sent to the wrong page requires a different action from unsuitable demand

Dynamic landing pages must also work with tracking templates. Google's documentation on ValueTrack parameters describes supported constructions around {lpurl}. Static or unusually embedded templates can lead to the wrong page or a 404. Open several eligible URLs in practice with their complete parameters, redirects and consent path.

Redirect is the correct verdict when the demand is suitable but a better page exists or should be built. Constrain reduces the dynamic page set through URL inclusions or exclusions. In the AI Max context, URL exclusions require text customisation and Final URL expansion; they are not universal blocks outside that configuration. Disable is chosen when the dynamic mechanism itself cannot be controlled safely.

URL inclusions are a hard boundary to included destinations and advertiser-supplied RSA landing pages only when Final URL expansion is off. If expansion remains active, Google can select additional relevant pages on the domain. Record this combination explicitly so that an apparent allowlist is not mistaken for an absolute limit.

Finding Objective Action Technical check Verdict
Suitable query, suitable actual page Preserve a sound chain No URL change Verify tracking and conversion Approve
Suitable query, weaker page Prefer a better destination Correct content, RSA target or inclusion Review actual selection again Redirect
Unsuitable page family Reduce the dynamic set URL exclusion or inclusion matrix Document FUE state Constrain
404, redirect fault or lost parameters Restore the technical chain Stop immediately and repair the template Test several {lpurl} cases Exclude
Mandatory RSA pinning Deliver a required statement reliably Disable FUE and URL inclusions Inspect assets actually served Constrain
14 · Business value

Evaluate query performance only with mature conversions and verified lead quality

Platform metrics show delivery, but do not automatically identify a good opportunity

Impressions, clicks, cost and reported conversions describe important stages, but not final value creation. For leads, reachability, requirement, region, budget, fit and sales status must flow back from the CRM. For ecommerce, include revenue, margin, cancellations and returns where these are available for the decision and linked in a privacy-compliant way.

Analysis takes place at pattern level and after sufficient data maturity. One expensive click does not prove poor intent; one conversion does not prove a good lead. Useful segments combine intent class, source, landing-page family and CRM outcome. Small samples are marked as uncertain rather than elevated by deceptively precise thresholds.

Approve therefore does not mean ‘this term is always profitable’. It means that, on the evidence available today, demand, delivery and outcome align. Observe remains legitimate where delay or a small case count prevents judgement. Constrain or Exclude follows a predefined commercial or risk threshold, not mere divergence from the old keyword plan.

Delivery

Trace impressions, clicks, cost, source and actual URL.

Conversion

Account for the primary action, value, counting method and delay.

Quality

Verify CRM status, fit, revenue or margin with the responsible team.

Decision

Record the verdict with evidence grade, threshold and next review date.

15 · Cadence

Organise regular reviews with clear emergency stops and without frantic routine changes

Normal optimisation requires mature evidence; critical misdirection is ended immediately

During the first few days, inspect technical delivery, 404s, language, brand risk and tracking more frequently. Commercial decisions follow the normal conversion and CRM delay. A weekly working review can then decide new patterns, while a monthly governance review examines lists, control levels, URL inventory, ownership and unintended reach loss.

Immediate action is justified for the wrong language or region, an unlawful brand association, an unapproved advertising claim, a 404, redirect loop, lost tracking or systematically irrelevant delivery. Isolate the affected mechanism as narrowly as possible. The team does not wait for statistical maturity before ending technical or compliance harm.

For normal performance fluctuations, keep the bidding target, budget, conversion goals and website as stable as possible during the observation window. Every necessary parallel change receives a timestamp and impact hypothesis. The review closes with an owner and deadline; open cases do not disappear in an export file but retain the Observe verdict.

  • Daily or frequently: inspect 404s, language, region, brand, mandatory claims and tracking.
  • Weekly: decide new intent patterns, sources, landing pages and mature quality evidence.
  • Monthly: audit negatives, brand lists, location rules, URL inventory and side effects.
  • For critical risk, stop the affected control immediately and as narrowly as possible.
  • For normal uncertainty, wait for data maturity and document parallel changes.
Stopping is not a causal analysis

A critical fault is ended immediately. Its origin and the permanent correction required are investigated afterwards from the preserved delivery case.

16 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions about controlling search terms in AI Max

Concise answers on reports, negatives, brands, locations and dynamic landing pages

The answers below summarise the most important decision boundaries. They do not replace an inspection of the specific campaign configuration or case-specific legal and technical approval. Where UI labels differ, the function, control level and actual reporting value take precedence.

Is a search term the same as a keyword?

No. A keyword is an input supplied by the advertiser; a search term is the reported user query. Exact match can also capture the same meaning or intent rather than identical wording. AI Max adds match type and source. Record the query, keyword context, source, ad and actual URL separately.

Does the AI Max filter show all AI Max traffic?

No. According to Google's documentation, the dedicated filter does not automatically include ‘Other search terms’. Low-volume queries can also be omitted because of privacy thresholds. Reports and Insights therefore provide different views. Compare totals only when filters, date range and visibility limits are recorded explicitly.

Should every unusual query be excluded immediately?

No. Unfamiliar wording can express valuable demand. First review search intent, source, headline, actual landing page and mature quality evidence. Reserve immediate intervention for clear risks such as the wrong region, an unlawful brand relationship, a 404 or demand that is unequivocally outside the business.

Does a negative keyword automatically cover plurals, synonyms and similar variants?

No. Negative keywords do not cover close variants automatically in the way positive match types can. Depending on the unsuitable pattern, singulars, plurals or synonyms may need separate entries. Capitalisation and misspellings are accounted for. Before approval, every negative needs a valuable counter-example to test for overblocking.

Are brand exclusions merely negative keywords under another name?

No. Brand lists work with brand relationships and have their own control levels and override rules. They are appropriate when a brand entity, rather than a mere string of characters, needs to be governed. Negative keywords remain responsible for linguistic patterns; inspect both controls for overlap.

Do Locations of interest replace campaign geographic targeting?

No. This optional ad group control operates in addition to campaign geography. Users must still meet the campaign's criteria, and excluded campaign locations take precedence. It can steer location-related intent more narrowly, but it cannot repair an incorrect base targeting configuration.

Are URL inclusions always a strict allowlist?

No. With Final URL expansion active, Google can select other relevant pages on the domain in addition to included URLs. A hard boundary is created only in the documented combination with expansion disabled; the inclusion URLs and advertiser-supplied RSA destinations then form the dynamic set. The actual URL must still be inspected.

When should a query be redirected, and when should it be excluded?

A suitable query with the wrong or weaker page should be redirected or have its eligible URL set constrained. Confirmed unsuitable demand is excluded at an appropriate scope. For a 404, redirect fault, lost tracking or compliance risk, stop immediately and then repair the underlying cause permanently.

17 · Decision

A sound query control log makes AI Max reach explainable, governable and useful for learning

The central question is not whether AI Max matches ‘well’ or ‘badly’. What matters is whether a specific query from a traceable source is served with an appropriate message, reaches a suitable actual page and, after sufficient maturation, creates business value. The AI Max query control log keeps that chain and its uncertainty visible.

Approve, Observe, Constrain, Redirect and Exclude give every case an actionable status. Negative keywords resolve recurring linguistic mismatch; brand and location controls resolve relationship and geographic questions; URL control resolves destination problems. The narrowest effective intervention protects valuable demand and makes verification easier.

For SMEs, this creates no promise of automatic performance, but a dependable operating method: reports are read with their limitations, technical faults are stopped immediately, commercial judgements are supported by CRM data and changes are versioned. That discipline is what makes incremental reach controllable.
